The Tactical Engine

The Tactical Engine is a down and dirty look at the blue-collar fundamentals of aggressive Engine work. This class will examine effective tactics for first-alarm assignment Engine companies. It will explore efficiently performing essential fireground tasks and will delve into tactical priorities. The class will address Truck work for Engines that don’t have the luxury of8 properly staffed truck companies arriving in a timely manner. Oftentimes in the non-urban environment, Engine Companies are required to be able to “do it all” and shift gears quickly on the fireground. The fast-paced, HOT class is scenario driven with participants getting practical training in size up, initial strategic and tactical prioritization and decision making, weapon selection, handline management, water supply options, search options, VES, basic forcible entry, ground ladders and outside vent duties. This class is geared toward those looking to maximize the performance of their Engine Company. (Class Length: 8 hours OR 16 hour)

NOTE:The 16 hour class is preferred as it allows a day of diving into individual skill stations more thoroughly honing those skills before applying them in real speed scenarios. Live Fire is preferred but not necessary for the second half of the 8 hour class and/or the 2nd day of the 16 hour class. The class is built around functioning with two 3-FF Engine Companies arriving on scene in staggered times and having to make tactical decisions based on conditions, staffing and limited staffing. Each scenario will be run with 6 students operating at a time. They will have to size up the situation, address fire attack, search, forcible entry and ventilation with limited personnel available. The class seeks to show the students best practices and options for hitting the fundamental tasks that must be accomplished on most every fire scene.

MAX CLAS SSIZE: 36students

For the 2 ½” lines a 1 ⅛”, 1 1/16” or 1 3/16” smoothbore is preferred OR a 250 @ 50 fixed gallonage fog nozzle. (If not available we can work with any nozzle type to make things easier)

-(1) training/burn building (at least 2 stories) or acquired structure (some furniture preferred for realism)

-(4) Thermal Imaging Cameras w/ extra batteries

-(2) sets of irons

-(1) forcible entry door with enough 2x2s and 1x2s to accommodate 10 force attempts per student. (2) 100’ utility rope bags with carabiners

-(2) 6’ hooks (NY hook and rubbish hook if available) (3) Burn Barrels (12) portable radios w/ batteries and charging station.

-SCBA w/ masks for instructors as we would be flying in.

-Makeshift furniture for realism (note we can build them out of pallets, plywood and OSB if needed but will need to add approx. 10 more pallets and 8 sheets of OSB or Plywood to the needs list to do the buildouts.

-Enough Live burn instructors to run the live fire portion if live fire is doable with enough pallets (see description below) and hay (usually one large bail) to burn on 2nd half of 8-hour class or Day 2 of 16-hour class option.

Approx. 35 pallets are needed for the 8 hour class and approx. 70 pallets are needed for the 16-hour class. Wecan do this class without live fire if desired.

We would just need to get a couple decent smoke machines with fog juice and extension cords to smoke up the tower. Note: if we do the non-live fire option we only need 4 instructors to run the class. If we do live fire we would need 4 additional instructors to assist.
